Situated at the foot of the majestic “Le Morne” mountain, the LUX* Le Morne is a wonderful 5 star hotel set in one of the most versatile part of the island and one of the best hotels in Mauritius. The LUX* Le Morne – a great resort in a beautiful and versatile region
Let’s start with the obvious; Le LUX* Le Morne Mauritius is… :
… beautiful !
Of course, the LUX* Le Morne is belonging to the higher-end hotels in Mauritius but, in this category, it definitely reaches the top of our ranking. The location is wonderful; Le Morne has always been one of our favorite areas as it is offering an great polyvalence (activities, hotels, weather conditions, view, …).
The hotel is nice, intimate and very well taken care of. You’ll notice gardeners, painters or electricians doing maintenance at all time.
The gardens are beautiful and the beaches made of the finest sand and cleaned everyday. The pools are not extravagant but they do the job and who needs a pool with such a beautiful ocean to explore anyway?
Our arrival – a sweet transition into the vacation
The welcome to the hotel was very warm. The staff provided wet towels and some appetizers and made you feel like you are on holiday since the first minute. However, what really made it for us, as we arrived very early in the morning, was the possibility to use a “transit room” with a shower and all the necessities to freshen ourselves up before the room was ready.
We always take an early morning flight when travelling to Mauritius but it was the first time that a hotel offered us such a possibility. It is simply the best way to start the vacation after an exhausting night flight and transit to the hotel.
The superior room – a perfect choice for a couple
We were not celebrating any special occasion and the superior room was the best possible choice.
Comfy bed, spacious bathroom (with a dressing) and amazing room service; we couldn’t ask for more. The cleaning was especially great; the rooms are made twice (!) a day. Falling in a freshly made bed is key for nights filled with the sweetest dreams.
The LUX* Le Morne provides shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and shower gel which are exclusively produced for the hotel chain and are truly incredible! We still preciously keep them at home for days where we want to reminisce these amazing vacation.
Every room comes with an iPad that keeps you posted about activities and information concerning the hotel. It allows you to book restaurants/activities, order food, book cleaning service for any specific time, and pretty much anything else.
The only downsize if you are travelling with extra-sized luggages (kitesurfers, we’re looking at you) is that you won’t have any place to store your equipment in your room.
But don’t worry, the hotel is very safe and we didn’t have any problem letting our gears outside for two weeks.
We would recommend to take a room around the Ilot pool (north part of the hotel) as this pool is a bit calmer, the bar is nicer (+ accessible from the pool) and you are closer to everything (restaurants, spa, tennis, boat house, kids club), excepted the dive center.
The food at Lux Le Morne – in one word: excellent!
You know us, we love refined kitchen and we are always chasing for delicate food, prepared with fresh and qualitative ingredients and these criterias are surely met here.
The breakfast is extremely complete ; a gigantic buffet is filled with fruits, juices, crepes, pastries, fresh omelettes, etc. that are just inviting you to start the day off on the right foot.
The coffee is selected and roasted especially for the LUX* chain. It is surely one of the best hotel coffee we have ever tasted. One scored for the coffee drinkers that we are!
We book half board and didn’t eat lunch very often but we still tried both the beach and the main restaurants. Each proposes a complete menu for lunch and we can recommend everything (sandwiches, salads, pizzas, fish, etc.). In the afternoon, fresh ice creams and sorbets are available at the pool bar. They are extremely good and included in half-board(!).
You can enjoy dinner in three restaurants. The buffet, which is changing every day, is always good. Moreover, a small pasta stand and a Chinese corner are always available if you are not in the mood for the evening’s theme (they are so tasty that you will end up taking some of it anyway). We were only a disappointed by the « Fisherman » buffet, which lacked fresh fish and sea fruits.
The beach restaurant is also very good and all but one or two lobster meals is included. “The East”, a Thaï restaurant is not part of half-board but the food is wonderful and should not be missed. With half board, you’ll moreover get a 800 rupee voucher per person, which covers a main course, more or less.
The creole evening was another highlight of the vacation. The food way extraordinary and the complete setting is beautiful (we love creole kitchen)! Unfortunately, we had a little incident with Amélie’s phone and lost all the pictures of the evening.
Lux Le Morne – Cocktails with a view
Le LUX* Le Morne doesn’t have a real cocktail bar as you may find in other establishments, the selection is okay and they all are enjoyable but this clearly is not their biggest strength.
Surprisingly, quite some classics are not on the menu but you can still get them if you are asking.
The service at the bar depends a lot on the barman in charge. It is sometimes great and fast and other times you wait up to 30 minutes until your cocktail is served.
Of course, everything takes its time on Mauritius and you cannot be too demanding with regards to serving times. However, the quality of the served cocktails is not very stable and it would deserve some improvements.
The service at the Lux Le Morne – Simply outstanding
Another highly positive point, aside sometimes at the bar as just said. Everyone, from the room service to the restaurant manager, were extremely kind at all time. Mauritius has always been a friendly country but you can notice that the team of Le LUX* is specifically trained to be polite and helpful at all time.
The staff in the restaurants “à la carte” (Beach and East) is great, in particular the waiters of the Beach who are irreproachable. The staff present in the main restaurant during the breakfast and the dinner (buffets) at the buffet is fast, friendly and organized.
However, lunch time at the main restaurant (the Kitchen) can be very disorganized. We experienced false orders and forgotten requests, even after reminding the staff. The lack of organization was clear and could easily turn a short lunch break into an hour long meal (most of it waiting).
Activities Lux Le Morne – Diving, Kiting and much more
As you know, we are very active and we do not like simple beach vacation. Le Morne is the perfect location for people looking to do something else than just staying on a lying chair sipping cocktails (even if it is also great for this purpose).
First of all, we warmly recommend the diving school of the hotel. Easy Dive was just one of the best thing of our vacation; the complete team is super-friendly and professional. You really should try to go for a dive, there are marvelous spots around.
The boathouse offers some basic watersport activities (pedalo, stand-up paddle, laser boats, windsurf, etc.) to have some fun in front of the hotel. They are also doing some nice snorkeling trips, which is better than staying in the small swimming area in front of the hotel.
If you are really into Watersport, don’t hesitate to see the offers outside of the hotel, Le Morne is the El Dorado for this. If you are sporty and comfortable swimming with fins, you shouldn’t miss to go swimming with the Dolphins.
The tennis court is nice and rackets are provided by the hotel. You find also cold water and towels there; very appreciable as playing a game in the Mauritian climate can be quite of a challenge.
